Yes, this is the excellent way to learn. But there is an important factor in this learning methodology. There is no time stress on the kids. If parents or teachers or society puts a time line for the kids to learn certain things, then automatically spoon feeding (Giving more facts) and stress comes in action.

Does the dead line need to be imposed on kids for learning certain things? For me it doesn't make any sense. What are we going to do by performing this learning in timely manner by giving so many facts? Are we in a hurry for the kids to make millions??

I have experienced with my kid and other kids. When we discuss I always end it with a question. After few days when we discuss the topic again, it is amazing the kids answer the questions themselves. During the interim time I learn a lot from the discussion.

Regarding experiences of pattern recognition, I use to find patterns while helping my mother stitch a floral hair decoration arranging flowers with different colors in a pattern first with jasmine flowers, then with fire cracker flowers and then with some herbal leaves.

Another thing I remember was decorating the rangoli designs in front of our house with different colors in a pattern..

Similarly, stitching with different designs on a piece of cloth in a certain pattern was all fun and also an indirect learning of patterns too.

Wow, thats a nice one to share and highlights the very Indian culture helped women to do pattern drawing during festivals. In Tamil nadu every women used to put kolam in front of the house first thing in the morning. That was the ancient wisdom of helping women first thing in the morning to do a mental exercise. see this American scientist article talks about this A tradition of figure-drawing in southern India expresses mathematical ideas and has attracted the attention of computer science- Marcia Ascher
