Non-Vegetarian Diet

Whether a non-vegetarian diet is good or bad is a most frequently asked question and the most debated topic in forums about diet.

In this forum we clearly understand that good and bad are only based on the five levels of identification of body, mind, intelligence, Awareness and Consciousness. Why should we discuss in five levels?. Because everyone has perception of everything in five levels. Our views contradict because we look from different levels. Defenetely at least one of the levels will click for each person.

1. At the body level (Health), vegetarian food is better.

Many scientific research articles proves that non-vegetarian food causes health problems. (See for examples by clicking at the articles).

Vegetarians May Be at Lower Risk of Heart Disease, Diabetes and Stroke

It is a myth to think that we can meet the requirement of proteins only through meat diet. There are famous vegetarian and famous atheletes .

There are famous intellectuals and scientists like Einstein who are vegetarians.

Infact too much protein gives over work to liver and kidneys. Normal people easily can meet protein requirement through vegetarian diet.

Can Vegetarian get enough omega fatty acids and Vitamin B12. Yes omega fatty acids are in several foods like flax. Vitamin B12 is obtained through fermented foods.

2. Vegetarian foods at mind level (Taste):

Taste addiction is an illusion created by the mind. If somebody is trained eating vegetarian food, they may not enjoy non-vegetarian taste. Some think meat taste better than veggies. But it all in the mind.

3. Vegetarian at the intelligent level ( Eco friendliness).

Several religious and spiritual teachings like Buddhism and Hinduism and Jainism insists of avoiding meat as an act of non-violence. They say that it is a bad karma (thought-action-result) to kill other beings.

The counter argument to bad karma theory is about the killing of plants by vegetarians, is also an act of violence. Yes vegetarians also kills plants and eat and also is a bad karma too. But to survive we have to choose the minimum killing. This is reflected in the science of Economics given below.

Economics of Energy is another way of looking at Karma:
Another angle to this thought is about the number of beings we kill while eating meat. A vegetarian kills only a few plants for a meal, example, if he eats a cup of rice, then that grains come from killing 5 to 10 rice plants. Whereas some body eating beef directly kills one animal and indirectly kills millions of grass plant the cow ate. This karma theory is scientifically proved by modern scientists from the angle of economics. See these links.

By being vegetarian, we will less pollute the nature. Being a vegetarian we can reduce the wastage of Energy. See scientific research on this aspect.

Karmic acts at the Cosmic Energy Tax level.
Killing plants and eat vs animals also considers the evolution of beings in the food chain. Eating meat is killing highly evolved animals is karmically bad than killing less evolved beings like plants and micro-organisms in fermented rice. Example, a mother who gave birth to child gets death punishments if we kills him at the age of 18 and above. The same mother gets life imprisonment is kills the son at age less than 3. But she get no imprisonment when she kills the son while in the womb. So the more evolved a being the more the karmic debt or tax we owe to the Cosmic Energy. This is explained as decrease in SAL Energy by eating meat.

4.Vegetarianism at the Awareness level - Control of Mind:

Animals have a higher mind development and so exhibit much fear when approached for killing. Their stressful fear and anger will naturally affect us at that same quantum level.

Our mind is always restless due to fear and insecure feeling of our jobs, relationships and possessions. This restless fearful nature is further intensified by eating non-vegetarian food. The mind and intellect of plants is less developed than of animals and so the agitations of the mind are much less in plants. Mental agitations are expressed as chemicals in the form of stress hormones which are seen in a higher degree in animals and very less in plants. Since we are interested in decreasing mental agitations for health reasons, and peace of mind, eating plant based foods helps us in our pursuit more than meat foods.

You can experiment how, by switching over to plant based foods, you gain better control over your senses and mind. It has to be very clear that just vegetarian food alone cannot bring mind control, but the point is that it facilitates it strengthening the intellect and pulls the mind towards it and away from the senses.

This is why in most spiritual traditions, vegetarian food is recommended. More than health, ethical and economical reasons, the most important aspect is that vegetarian food helps in strengthening the control over the restless mind.

5.Vegetarian at Consciousness level (Compassion):
Being vegetarian at the Self-Awareness level is that of compassion. Compassion means to others as we feel ourselves. Do not do anything that others want to do to one self. In other words do actions that we would like others to do us.

Many vegetarian feels compassion not only to human beings but also to other beings. Several religious and spiritual teachings like Buddhism and Hinduism and Jainism talk about compassion first through food we eat. The world is increasing in terrorism and violence when we become less compassionate to other beings and naturally to human beings. So first practice non-violence at the basic food level to create a world free from terrorism and violence.

Talking about showing compassion towards all creatures, what do we do when we find insects in our house or when a mosquito bites us? Do we treat it compassionately by removing it carefully and putting it outside in the backyard or just kill it when it bites us?

excessive non veg food intake is bad. Most of these foods are devoid of fibre and are high in bad cholesterol.
Lots of chemicals are used as preservativesin non vegetarian food for processing and storage which are again harmful to body.Non veg foods also require lots of digestive enzymnes which means the body would require excessive supply of digestive enzymes to ko promote the digestion of these foods.
Bottom line.Would not recommend if can be avoided.

Answer can be found by asking a question to yourself......if like the insect (as a human being) you landed up in a foreign place. Will you think it is fair to be killed just because you lost your way...wont you be preferred to be taken out?

Suppose you harm somebody there in the act of protecting yourself....is it fair to be killed for that act or again you be taken to your own habitat?.

Always the answer comes when you connect yourself to the problem you want to solve.

I was a Non-vegetarian, now shifted to vegetarian diet from the past 2yrs and enjoying its benefits. I would definitely say with experiences that say “NO to Non-Veg”

1.My physical health has significantly improved.
2.There is good control over my senses and I don’t crave for its taste anymore.
3.The thought of killing innocent animals is always there whenever I see meat and now don’t even feel like going closer or looking at raw meat.
4.There is good control over my mind and no more mood swings or depression symptoms. There is good concentration on whatever things I do.
5.I am able to be in the state of awareness all the time. I am developing lot of interest on the spiritual side too.
