Navarathri is performed for increasing the luck energy in life. We need Knowledge and Awareness about this.

First night:

1. One has to be clear about whether God is male or female. If God is male then why worship a feminine form. The confusion comes because two words in Vedic science is not made clear in current age.

Spirit and matter. Anything that is not-visible (imperceptible) is Male (Masculine) and all that is perceptible through five senses is female (Feminine). In other words, Energy is perceptible through five senses hence it is feminine. While that which witnesses the Energy is not perceptible and not Energy, hence is known as Male.

You experience this duality in your own Self. You are that "alive" which is not seen or perceptible to any one. Every one perceives your functional body and infer that you are alive. This unseen (imperceptible) "liveliness" is Maleness or Purusha or Brahman and the body is Prakrithi or Sakthi.

However both Brahman and Sakthi are one aspect in duality which is shown as Ardhanareeshwara.

Navarathri is about increasing the Energy aspect or the perceptible form of Energy for day to day life functioning. So Golu is a pyramid in which only the energy half is exhibited (all doll forms) , while the other half is not seen (Adhrista).

So from the first night onwards the rituals are done to enhance the perceptible energy (Sakthi) from the imperceptible Brahman (Masculine Consciousness).

We invoke the Energy from the gross root (Mula-dhara) as Śailaputrī , the Earth element or the body element. The gross energy has inertia and laziness and ignorance qualities.

To generate any form of "Energy", we need to stimulate motion (opposite of inertia). This inertia is called in various names and forms ....as Kapha (viscous fluid in physical body), and as "Tamas in our emotional mind and as Asuras in the logical intellectual aspect.

The asuras to be aware on the first day are Madhu and Kaitabha born out of ears of a sleeping vishnu. This symbolically means that laziness to listen or know to "Truth" creates imbalance in life at all levels.

So the first three nights of Navarathri is to overcome this inertia by invoking the Awareness-Energy (Krea-Sakthi) called Durga.

So chanting Devi Mahatmyam's Durga Saptasloki , Lalitha Sahasranamam are good. See this schedule .

When we do this rituals with this awareness, good health is restored at body level. Fasting is done for cleansing which means removing kapha-toxins in our body.

So Navarathri brings Energy-benefits at all levels.

Tomorrow we will update the details of second day.

Second Night
We know that the masculine (not perceptible in five senses) and feminine (perceptible) intersperse and create manifestations. Like the X and Y chromosomes make a male and XX only makes the female and there cannot be a YY alone to manifest as a being.Because X is Energy and Y is Consciousness. Consciousness cannot manifest and if does, it is Sakthi or Energy. This pattern is Universally seen in everything.

Since Energy has grades (high medium and low shades), triangles are used to convey the Energy spectrum like color spectrum.

Potential Energy (Static) is maleness and kinetic is female or dynamic nature. For an action to happen potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy. Example energy stored in battery is potential and then transformed to kinetic (like switch on a light bulb).

Important point is that the battery should be recharged (potential). Navarathri is done for increasing our potential Energy that we can use it for our material life.

In this night, we have to be aware that the rituals done bring two level benefits. The feminine aspect is about bringing down the Energy to material life comforts. This is why the feminine is depicted as a downward triangle.

We also do rituals to increase the knowledge of Self, which is opposite to bringing down the Energy. This upward journey is shown as upward triangle or the male triangle. Thus life should be a balance of income (maleness) and expenses (femaleness).

The Universe is in manifestation with these aspects and so represented by 4 Upward male triangles and 5 female triangles. These 9 triangles create 43 + dot-bindu = 44 Energy triangles. 8 means completeness. This is shown as the Sriyantra and Meru (3D), the cosmic symbol. The 43 triangles represent all Goddesses (Energy attributes) and the Bindu she herself, the Laitha (the player).

The feminine nature of the ritual is to wish (pray) for luck (Energy) in fulfilling our desires.

The masculine nature is to get rid of our negatives qualities (greed, anger, lust, mean, pride and jealousy).

This is symbolized as Devi killing the asuras (demons) in a masculine manner. To kill for protection is mostly a man's job.

This is why Devi wakes Vishnu from slumber and fight Madhu and Kaitabha, who represents our strong likes and dislikes attitude of mind. This attitude hides the reality or Truth in any aspect of life.

So we need to enquire (vichara) about the Truth (Brahm) which makes us to invoke Brahmachari in the second night.

All these stories are told by sage Medha to the king Suratha and a merchant Samadhi.

Hence reciting these names in Mahisasura mardhini stothram brings nurtures the Self-Awareness in us to lead a happy life.

The cleaning aspect is an important part of Navarathri to clean at all levels. The body cleaning (fasting), house cleansing, environment-community cleaning activities as part of hygiene.

At mind level the negatives has to be cleaned.
At intelligence level, selfish-interpretation of knowledge should be cleaned.

Third Night:

We have to realize the truth about Energy. All Energy will undergo change. Our body energy will undergo changes which we call ageing.

Our emotional energy also changes and so what we liked before becomes a dislike later and vice versa. This is why in relationships also there is change.

Similarly in intelligence and information also there is change. But only wisdom (Truth) can then help us to get connected to Self-awareness.

What is unchanging is our Self awareness which we call as divine or Goddess Devi.

This is explained through the three characters Suratha, Samadhi and Medha.

Yesterday we talked about Suratha king being defeated by a small group of enemies and so losing his kingdom he wanders in the forest.

Ratha means chariot and symbolize our body. The word "su" denotes good and so it means the healthy body. The small enemies represent infectious organisms or small imbalance of the functionalities can result in loss of health.

Samadhi (focussed or objective oriented mind) the merchant who represent the business-type (give and take) emotional mind is also deceived by his children and wife. The dearmost wife and children symbolize our accompanying thoughts in mind which can suck our will power any moment of time. Losing his wealth he also wanders in forest and meets Suratha and wonders (enguires) why all this happens to them.

Both of the them then meets Medha who tells that all this happens because of Maha-Maya, the Devi. They enquire who is that Devi whom you call Mahamaya? How did she come into being, and what is her sphere of action,
What constitutes her nature? What is her form? Where from did she originate?

The awareness seeking nature of mind is what is invoked in the third night as chandra-ghanta meaning the mind as the ringing bell. Chandra the moon represent the moon and ghanta is bell. Bell rings brings us awareness.

Summary: From enquiry mode we should transform to awareness seeking mode.

Fourth Night:

This is also the first night of invoking the Energy as Lakshmi, which means act in an organized manner (Rajasik). This organized dynamic nature of Energy has a beauty in it as Lakshmi. This lakshmi-Energy is seen in several forms or aspects in life changes.

We ought to know that the Energy undergoes two directions of changes. The outward Evolution and inward involution. Evolution is force of Rahu (snake-headed) driving more in materialism. Snake is a symbol of Energy.

The Snake-Tail is Ketu that drives involution. This is inner-evolution. All beings evolve and as a Human being dominantly goes involution.

For involution one needs to be reminded pf the un-manifest constantly. This constant-reminder is marriage. This is symbolized by doing the doll-wedding. A male and a female wooden doll is kept in the Golu as a symbolic of cultural-family heritage.

They are considered as representative of God and Goddess and wedding is performed by children under guidance of adults. This way the understand the true meaning of showing gratitude at all five levels. Gratitude is not merely saying in words by by involvement of those who help in our life.

So wedding is not by two individuals for living together but for showing gratitude to parents, relatives, teachers, cosmic forces and the community.

The mangal-sutra is worn as a symbol of this relationship.
Poonool is a thread worn as a symbol of relationship with the Guru.

With this understanding and approach to always be aware of the "Self", one experience a burst of joy of a new-universe. This is the symbol of considering the fourth night as Kushmanda.

Fifth Night: In this night one understands that in the process of evolution and involution, there is a budgeting of energy for various aspects of life. Some segregates it more for professional and suffer the deficiency in health or family life. While some other heaps it for luxury and fails to regenerate it for future (Spiritual).

The imbalancing "tendencies" we create is depicted as Asuras or demons in Devi Mahatmayam. The streamlining aspect is the Self-awareness or Devi. This is symbolically done through rituals like Kanya pooja, by inviting and honoring nine young girls (Kanyas).

We acknowledge the unchanging "Purusha" in these Kanya Girls, who will soon grow out to be the transforming "Prakriti", the creative or feminine aspect.

Sixth Night:

Karthyayani Devi is the Durga, which is embodied by Mahalakshmi with the ability to kill Mahisasura and Raktabeeja.

We continue to take rebirths but resists transformation. This is what Mahisasura symbolize of changing many forms like a lion, warrior, elephant and buffalo. It is the chameleon-attitude of our incessant desires.

In this process we dissipate energy to think too many thoughts to keep this action going. This is the symbol of Raktabeeja, springing innumerable demons from each drop of blood spilled. Our thoughts are all energy forms which are all materialistic. We feel weak with too many active thoughts in brain which we call as mental stress.

Kali spreading out her tongue to suck all blood means that we should develop the habit of talking positive words even to a negative attitude generating person. you will experience this power of it.
