Sundarakandam

Sundarakandam is the most illustrious  portion of Ramayan. Usually everyone translates Sundarkhand as most beautiful. Sundara also means most illustrious that means  notably or brilliantly outstanding because of dignity or achievements or actions. Sundarkhand is about the acheivements of Hanuman.

Reciting sundarkand every night (atleast one success aspect of Hanuman) will bring a tremendous change in our life and attitude on life. One's mind will progress in an astonishing manner when one understand the Selfless nature of Hanuman.

"Man" in Sanskrit means the mind and "Hanu" means the pointed part of a spear head. "Hanuman" is that mind with one pointedness to Serve only God (Raam), the highest in  Spiritual Sadhana. Only through Seva, one gets transformed to the divine (Moksha).

Hanuman is the Seva aspect of Lord Shiva, the Self-Awareness.

Selfless actions and attitude purifies all karmic negativities when done without any expectations. Only pure Love (unconditional) or  doing for Selftual Joy (devotion) can make an action Selfless. With Selfless attitude (Hanuman's nature of action) releives one from the malefic effects of Saturn and Gulikan.

The key points in Sunderkhand and symbolism connecting our Self are given in bracketed bold letters.

* Hanuman gains confidence after hearing about his power through Jambhavan (We get self confidence when we realize our Self is divine in nature).

* He self-realizes his power through Rama nama (Name of the Self is Naama, the name, hence reciting Lords name is an energizer)

* He crosses the sea.(With the knowledge of Self one crossess the sea of suffering of life)

* Reaches Lanka where he met the deity of Lanka. (Lanka is individuality feeling, the place a Atma is trapped in the prison of senses called Raavan)

* He searched Sitha all around the city. (Hanuman means the great mind, will search for the individualized mind to join (unite) with the Higher Mind)

* He searched Sitha within the city. (Searching within - internally)

* He searched Sitha within the places of all royal members.(Searching within intelligence and awareness)

* He came to know about Vibeeshana.(Vibeeshana is the aspect of us that always warns of the Truth)

* He saw Ravana for first time in sleeping mood and misunderstood Mandodhari as Sitha (Even the greatest mind will mis-understand the Jeevathma for physical pleasures. Mandothari is the pleasure accompanied with senses)

* He looses his confidence in his task (We all experience this loss of Hope in our journey).

* He plans to kill himself because he was ashamed of his failure to see his king and Rama .(Failures in Spiritual progress and the thoughts to end life).

* Finally he replans his actions and identified Ashoka vanam. (Finding the shoka (suffering) in ourself )

* There he saw Sitha,  but first thoroughly studied about her state of mind.(Vichara, the inquiry method about the reality-Self and non-real world)

* There he saw Ravana threatening her.(The ten (5+5) Sensorial organs of perception and action threaten to give our Spiritual evolution)

* He appeared before her when she was suppose to kill herself. (The great mind catches every time before the jeevatma undergoes another cycle of birth)

* She could not accept him as Ram's messenger, he proved, it was very difficult for him to prove that.(We doubt the great inner-Awareness of us, it is difficult to prove the realtity)

* Exchange of ring and Choodamani.(ring is the symbsol of divine union and choodamani the symbol of Divine knowledge)

* He spoils the garden beacuse he wish to meet Ravana.(once we curtail sensual pleasures, we will confront our Ego, face to face)

* He fought with many soldiers and finally with Indrajith and purposely got tied with bhramastram.(Brahmasthram is the symbol of a power to bind or destroy  the Mind. During spiritual practice, the mind should not killed. So in such instances, simply yeilding temporarily to Sensuality is a means to guage the power of Ego. Indrajith symbolize the power of sensaulity and Hanuman just yielded to him to be able to confront Ravana and measure his strength).

* He met Ravana to knew about his power and acted as messenger and also studied his status of mind.(The Self-Awareness can only guage the Ego)

* His tail gets burnt, he burns lanka, he feels for that.(Tail symbolize the cyclic nature of mind and burning lanka means the destoying the individuality in us using the very same cyclic pattern of mind. here it means the ritualistic cyclic manner)

* He worries about Sitha, and meets her, said good bye (we get scared whether our spiritual sadhana will kill the individuality and get re-born before it could join Paramatma)

* He conveys his successful accomplishment of finding Sita to Lord Raam and narrated all the events associated with it (This is the inner dialogue one experiences with one's own higher Soul).
